Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj on Wednesday met President Pranab Mukherjee to protest against the appointment of P P Rao to the selection committee for the Lokpal.

Sushma had objected to Rao’s selection as a panel member, saying that he was too close to the Congress and that the ruling party was filling the committee with its loyalists. She is learnt to requested Pranab to pressure the government to reconsider the decision.

The BJP blamed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for the controversy and accused him of having “failed” in his duty as the appointment “went against the spirit of Parliamentary approval”. “By insisting upon this one particular name and forcing its approval, the PM is seeking to negate the entire spirit of select committee recommendations and Parliamentary approval. The foremost blame lies with the PM. The PM as the leader of a team in the collegium must make an effort to bring about a consensus. He failed in the case of the Chief Vigilance Commissioner,” party leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said.
