After a gap of nearly nine years, top diplomatic representative of US in India, ambassador Nancy Powell, will meet Gujarat Chief Minister and BJP’s PM candidate Narendra Modi on Thursday, reversing official policy of keeping a distance after Modi’s visa application was rejected over alleged involvement in the 2002 riots.

Confirming the move, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin on Tuesday said it was “very normal” for a foreign diplomat or ambassador to request the MEA to facilitate their meeting with a constitutionally elected representative. According to the US Embassy, the visit is “part of our concerted outreach to senior political and business leaders which began in November to highlight the US-India relationship”.

While the US will play down the significance, it is clear that Washington has been worried about not being in touch with BJP’s PM candidate, considered a front-runner in the upcoming elections.
