Blowing the bugle for the Lok Sabha elections, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday released its first list of 20 candidates in eight states.
Former journalist and AAP spokesperson Ashutosh will contest against Law Minister Kapil Sibal from Chandni Chowk seat, while member of AAP National Executive Kumar Vishwas will take on Rahul Gandhi in Amethi. The AAP candidates list came just a day after a meeting of its Political Affairs Committee.
Activist Medha Patkar, who recently joined the AAP, will contest from Mumbai (North East) against NCP MP Sanjay Dina Patil. AAP National Executive member and its Maharashtra chief Mayank Gandhi will contest from Mumbai (North West) against Congress’ Gurudas Kamat. In the first list, the party has declared candidates for seven key Lok Sabha seats in UP, six in Maharashtra, two in Delhi and one seat each in Haryana, Arunachal Pradesh, MP, Odisha and Punjab. Over a dozen candidates would fight for LS seats that are currently represented by the Congress.
“The selection of all these candidates has been done on the basis of their work for the society. While choosing the candidates, we have tried to prevent corrupt and people with criminal charges from entering politics,” said AAP leader Manish Sisodia.
Former banker and AAP leader Meera Sanyal will contest from Mumbai South. Anjali Damaniya, convenor of AAP’s Maharashtra Unit will contest from Nagpur against BJP’s Nitin Gadkari. H S Phoolka, a senior lawyer, will contest from Ludhiana against Union minister Manish Tewari. AAP’s Subash Ware will contest against Suresh Kalmadi from Pune. Analyst-turned-politician Yogendra Yadav will contest from Gurgaon against the BJP’s Rao Inderjeet Singh.
Baba Hardev will contest against SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav in Mainpuri and Mukul Tripathi has been pitted against Union minister Salman Khurshid in Farrukhabad. Soumendra Dhaka will contest against Civil Aviation Minister and RLD Chief Ajit Singh from Baghpat, while Khalid Pervez will take on Congress MP Mohammed Azharuddin in Moradabad.
