The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) on Thursday decided to set up two new Benches of the Armed Forces Tribunal (AFT) at Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir and at Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh respectively to take up service-related cases of military personnel.

With the two new Benches, the total number of Benches of the AFT would go up to 11, sources said here.

The AFT was inaugurated in August 2009 based on a 2007 law passed by Parliament to handle nearly 10,000 such cases that were pending before various courts across the country, most of them with the high courts.

The AFT already had its Principal Bench in New Delhi and eight Regional Benches with 15 courts in all - three each in New Delhi, Chandigarh and Lucknow and one each in Jaipur, Mumbai, Kolkata, Guwahati, Chennai and Kochi.
