On the run for over four months, BJP MLA Rajkumar Thukral surrendered before a court here in connection with a case related to 2011 Rudrapur riots which left four persons dead and 60 injured.

Thukral came on a scooty to surrender in the court of CJM Ashutosh Mishra, over four months after an NBW was issued against him in the riot case.

According to an FIR lodged in the case last year, Thukral is accused of gunning down a man during the riots which erupted after torn pages of a holy book were found outside a place of worship in the town.

His failure to appear in court despite repeated notices led to attachment of his property on December 28. He was declared an absconder after that and a reward of Rs 2500 was announced for anyone giving information on his whereabouts.

Claiming that he is innocent and being framed, opposition BJP has been demanding withdrawal of the case against Thukral who represents the Rudrapur seat in the state assembly.
