MSY Kin on List of New Information Commissioners
Putting an end to speculations and an year-long selection process, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has declared the list of eight state information commissioners, which includes a close relative of Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav.
The list, which was released on Thursday, has six journalists, including Arvind Singh, who is the father-in-law of Mulayam’s son Prateek.
The other information commissioners are Rajkeshwar Singh, Arvind Singh Bisht, Swadesh Kumar, Vijay Sharma, Gajendra Yadav, Haider Abbas -- all journalists, Mohammad Usman and Parasnath Gupta.
Akhilesh’s move seems to be a bid to mend ways with the media after the recent ruckus with the reporters relating to negative reporting about the Muzaffarnagar relief camps.
Besides Arvind, Mulayam’s relatives holding coveted positions include Mulayam, daughter-in-law Dimple, nephew Dharmendra Yadav and brother Ram Gopal Yadav, who are already MPs. Some other relatives are being given tickets this time to contest the Lok Sabha elections due this year.
The selection committee, set up more than a year ago, was headed by Akhilesh, and Leader of the Opposition Swami Prasad Maurya as its member. Out of the eight nominees, two are said to be from the BSP quota.
The file containing the names of the applicants had been shuttling between the Raj Bhawan and the Chief Minister’s Office for over a year.
Finally, the Governor cleared the names and the new information commissioners are expected to sworn in soon.
Nutan Thakur, a serial petitioner has challenged the process for the selection of the info commissioner as her husband – a controversial IPS officer Amitabh Thakur – has been denied the post.
