Sunanda Pushkar, wife of Union Minister Shashi Tharoor, was found dead in a five-star hotel here on Friday evening. According to sources, the body of 52-year-old Sunanda, who earlier worked as a sales director in the Dubai-based TECOM Investments, was found dead in mysterious circumstances, not completely ruling out the suicide angle. According to sources, she was last seen in the hotel lobby at 3.30 pm on Friday.

Giving details of the incident Shashi Tharoor’s PS Abhinav Kumar told reporters that Tharoor informed him about the death after reaching his suite at 8.30 pm and he called up police at 9 pm.

A team from Sarojini Nagar Police station rushed to the hotel. Just 30 minutes before he reached hotel, an alleged tweet from Tharoor’s Twitter account at 8.01 pm said that he would not attend the Jaipur Literature Festival because his wife was unwell and needs to be with her.

“When the Minister came back at 8.30 pm, he found the door of her suite locked from  inside. I called the police and informed them. She seemed to be sleeping in a normal way, there was no sign of poisoning or scuffle but later it was found that she was dead. There were hotel doctors in the room,” Kumar said adding that the couple checked in at Hotel Leela’s room number 345 on Thursday as their residence was being renovated.

“Prima facie there is no suspicious sign in the room, which has been sealed by the police. There was no external injury found on her body. Body will be taken to AIMS hospital for post-mortem after consulting with the area SDM,” an official in the control room said.
