NEW DELHI: The gay abandon with which the women two-wheeler riders currently whizz past on the national capital’s imposing roads may soon become a thing of the past, if the Delhi Government has its way.

According to a submission made in the High Court by the state administration, it was planning to amend its rules so that women riders would also be required to don helmets.

A Bench comprising Acting Chief Justice A K Sikri and Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw agreed to the state counsel’s submission and allowed two months’ time for the government to enforce the helmet rule for women.

Earlier, a PIL had been filed in the High Court by one P R Ulas, who contended that the use of helmets be made mandatory for women riders in the capital.

Advocate R K Kapoor, appearing for the petitioner told the Bench that Rule 115 of the Delhi Motor Rules, which made wearing of the helmet optional for women, posed a major challenge to the its uniform implementation in the state.
