Yoga Guru, Kamal, Vairamuthu, Tafe Boss on Padma Awards List

Late Justice J S Verma, actor Kamal Haasan, Justice Dalveer Bhandari—member, International Court of Justice, novelists Anita Desai and Ruskin Bond, specialist in neonatology  at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital Neelam Kler, tennis player Leander Paes, badminton coach Pullela Gopichand and ghatam artist T H Vinayakram are among the 24 Padma Bhushan awardees this year announced by the Centre on Saturday.

Scientist R A Mashelkar and yoga guru BKS Iyengar have been awarded the Padma Vibhushan.

In all, the government announced 127 Padma awards comprising two Padma Vibhushan, 24 Padma Bhushan and 101 Padma Shris. Twenty-seven of the awardees are women. The list of Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri is dominated by eminent persons from science and literature and education. Out of 24 Padma Bhushan awards, 14 went to scientists and authors.

Padmanabhan Balaram, biochemist and director of the IISc in Bangalore, Jyeshtharaj Joshi of Homi Bhabha National Institute, Mahadevappa Madappa, farm scientist, Dr Thirumalachari Ramasami of Dept of Science and Technology, and Dr K Radhakrishnan, ISRO chairman, have been awarded Padma Bhushan.

The Padma Bhushan list in literature includes Vairamuthu Ramasamy Thevar, Tamil poet and lyricist, Prof Anisuzzaman, academic of Bengali literature, and Lloyd Rudolph and Susanne Rudolph, who taught South Asian Politics and Gandhian thoughts and practice for three decades in US universities.
