Murli Deora Among 7 Congress RS Candidates

A day after party president Sonia Gandhi and vice president Rahul Gandhi discussed the nomination of members to Rajya Sabha with AICC general secretaries in-charge of the states concerned, Congress general secretary Janardan Dwivedi on Sunday announced the list of seven candidates.

A day after party president Sonia Gandhi and vice president Rahul Gandhi discussed the nomination of members to Rajya Sabha with AICC general secretaries in-charge of the states concerned, Congress general secretary Janardan Dwivedi on Sunday announced the list of seven candidates. Senior leader Murli Deora has been renominated to Rajya Sabha from Maharastra, as has been Motilal Vora. Both the leaders were set to retire from Rajya Sabha in April.

The list announced on Sunday night, includes the names of Hussain Dalwai from Maharashtra, Ranjib Biswal from Odisha, Viplove Thakur from Himachal Pradesh, Haji Abdul Salam from Manipur and Wansuk Syiem from Meghalaya.

According to sources, first Lok Sabha member from Manipur, Rishang Keishing, has requested the Congress leadership not to consider him for renomination to Rajya Sabha due to age related problems. Though Sonia Gandhi was keen to renominate him, based on his personal request, the party fielded Haji Abdul Salam from Manipur.

Congress is yet announce party candidates for Rajya Sabha polls in Haryana, Andhra Pradesh,Assam, Gujarat, Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh. It is likely to announce the list on Monday as the last date for filing nomination is Tuesday.
