BJP candidate for the Basirhat LS constituency, Shamik Bhattacharya was on Wednesday attacked by a group of TMCworkers, when he visited the home of a tribal girl, who was gangraped  after her house burgled.

Bhattacharya said he came to know that a home belonging to a tribal family was burgled by some armed men on Tuesday night and their daughter was gangraped, while campaigning in his constituency. “Along with another tribal leader Sukumar Sardar, I went to the girl’s home at Sandeshkhali to meet the victim and family. The dacoits had looted jewellery, cash and then gangraped the teenager.”

“As I entered the hutment to console the victim, a local TMC leader accosted me. I could hear him calling out to his supporters to come with arms. When I came out, I saw a group of young men rushing towards me. Our cars were damaged and window panes smashed. All the culprits are known men of the area,” he informed.

He alleged that the police merely registered a case of theft, though, the villagers had identified the rapists.
