Jung Forms Committee to Check Pollution

With the recent reports of World Health Organisation which declared the city’s air as the most polluted in the world, Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung on Tuesday constituted a high powered committee to check pollution.

The National Green Tribunal too has issued a notice to the environment and petroleum ministry on Tuesday after taking cognisance of public-interest litigation filed by senior pediatric surgeon Sanjay Kulshresthra. The tribunal has issued an order to these ministries to appear on July 3. In the litigation, Kulshresthra mentioned that air pollution can increase the chances of birth defects, fetal growth retardation and premature delivery especially in those women residing close to busy roads.

Najeeb Jung has appointed Chief Secretary Sanjay Kumar Srivastava, Special Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Taj Hassan, Secretary (Environment Department), Sanjeev Kumar, Transport Commissioner, Gyanesh Bharti and Additional Secretary (Environment Department) and Sandeep Kumar Mishra as the committee members.

The committee will have the power of extension of the team and it is free to hire members from government or private sector and NGOs. “Jung has directed the committee to submit a report within four weeks,” the LG’s secretariat said in a statement.
