NEW DELHI: At least four top militant commanders were involved in planning and execution of June 4 ambush on Army convoy in Manipur, the government officials revealed on Monday. The information received from intelligence agencies indicated that Niki Sumi, the military adviser of National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Khaplang (NSCN-K) faction, was the mastermind of the attack.

Sumi, a resident of Naharbari at Dimapur in Nagaland, hatched the entire plan along with NSCN-K commanders -- Neymlang and Starson Lamkang -- and one Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL) militant leader camping in Taga region of Myanmar. They acted under the direct command of NSCN-K chief S S Khaplang.

Intelligence inputs noted that Sumi survived the hot pursuit by Indian Army on June 9 and escaped from the camp minutes before the attack. “All four militants are on the run now, after last week’s surgical strike. It is no secret that several outfits are operating in the region and they should have been provided help by Ulfa or some groups in Myanmar,” officials said.
