Landslides Bury Entire Manipur Village, Kills At Least 20

GUWAHATI: Landslides, triggered by incessant rains, buried a tiny Manipur village on Saturday, killing 20 people.

Official sources said that the deaths were reported from Joumol in Chandel district on the Manipur-Myanmar border. Altogether 21 people, all belonging to the Kuki tribe, lived in the village. One survived miraculously. Manipur is witnessing the worst flood in many years. The deluge has affected nearly 15 lakh of the state’s 28 lakh population. Almost all rivers are flowing above danger mark following moderate to heavy rainfall.

The Centre has rushed NDRF personnel to the region for relief and rescue operations.

Meanwhile, the flood situation in south Bengal turned grim with 1.19 lakh people taking shelter in relief camps in 12 districts even as weatherman forecast more heavy rains in the next two days.
