SC Against Tamil Nadu Plea for CISF Cover at Dam

Kerala also informed the court that deployment of Central forces is unnecessary as a special police station is being set up there.

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday questioned the rationale behind the Tamil Nadu government’s demand for deployment of Central Industry Security Force (CISF) at Mullaperiyar dam since police is already posted there for its protection by Kerala government.

The Bench headed by Chief Justice H L Dattu’s response came after counsel for the Kerala Government submitted the Tamil Nadu was raising complaint on an issue which was settled by a Constitutional Bench and that the neighbouring State was trying to extend the case.

Kerala also informed the court that deployment of Central forces is unnecessary as a special police station is being set up there.

The Centre had earlier dismissed the TN demand to deploy CISF at Mullaperiyar dam. In an affidavit filed in the apex court, the Centre had made it clear that Central forces could not be deployed at the dam site without the permission of Kerala. The court adjourned the case for four weeks.

Meanwhile, the Central Government on Thursday  denied permission to Kerala for conducting a pre-feasibility study for construction of a new dam at Mullaperiyar.
