Probe Ordered Into Suicide by Woman in Police Custody

LUCKNOW: A magisterial inquiry has been ordered into the death of a woman whose body was found hanging at a police station in Sitapur district, leading to violent protests by her family members, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav today said.

"I have come to know of the incident and a probe has been ordered... impartial action will be taken on the basis of the report.

"It would also be seen that those who purposely took law in their hands are punished... administration had reached the spot and some police officers were also injured in the incident," Yadav told newspersons after a cabinet meeting here.

"I regret that a daughter of a family lost her life but certain things have come to the fore like she went out of the house in the morning and wanted to jump in water... she was also taken to the village by the police and all this will come out in the probe... but we will help the family," he said.

Several times when police and administration have taken right action, some parties have tried to take political mileage on the situation, the Chief Minister said, adding, "I will appeal to the people to be wary of it."

The 28-year-old woman, who was saved earlier in the day, allegedly hanged herself inside police station yesterday, triggering violence in which a youth was killed and the Superintendent of Police along with three policemen was injured.

The Chief Minister had yesterday announced a compensation of Rs five lakh each to the family members of both the deceased.

Agitated over the incident, the woman's family and relatives had yesterday blocked Kotwali road and turned violent, indulging in brick-batting and firing. Police resorted to firing in the air and used tear gas to quell the mob.

Meanwhile, four policemen -- inspectors Ravindra Tiwari, Ashok Verma, and two constables Brahmadev and Kanaihya Lal Ojha of Kotwali Mehmoodabad were suspended by SP Rajesh Krishna in connection with the incident.

A magisterial probe by ADM Sitapur Sarvesh Dikshit into the incident has been ordered by DM Sitapur Suryapal Gangwar.

Prohibitory orders under Section 144 CrPC were imposed in Mehmoodabad area and schools and colleges remained closed today.
