2 Cops Suspended After Girl's Suicide Over Harassment by Youth

AURANGABAD: The authorities here have suspended two police officials for dereliction of duty after a 22-year-old-girl, an MBA student, ended her life having been fed up with alleged harassment by a youth and the police's apathetic attitude.

Shruti Kulkarni, the girl, drank poison on August 17 at her house here, and died at a hospital on August 20. Her suicide note -- which went viral on social media -- said she had "no other option left".

She had lodged a complaint of molestation against Swapnil Maniyar, who had been harassing her for quite some time, on two occasions. But both the times he got bail from the court.

Shruti's family members claimed yesterday that booking Maniyar under more stringent sections of IPC and other laws would have ensured that he stayed in jail. They appealed the city police commissioner Amitesh Kumar to look into the case.

Kumar, later in the day, announced suspension of constables N D Hiwale and V Raju for not taking proper action on the complaint. Another officer, assistant sub-inspector Harish Khatawkar, was transferred.

Deputy commissioner Vasant Pardeshi had been asked to conduct an inquiry against these policemen, Kumar added.

CIDCO police station here has registered a case under section 306 (abatement of suicide) of the IPC. Maniyar is still absconding, police said.
