MUMBAI: It was unusual for ambitious Indrani Mukerjea to remain the wife of ex-Star India CEO Peter Mukerjea for a long period of 13 years given her record of ending her previous marriages in a couple of years.
Indrani had entered the corridors of financial power only because she was the wife of Peter, one of the most successful and rich businessmen in the country. She would have lost everything — from fame to wealth — had Peter separated from her. But why did she sense that a day will come when Peter would announce a formal breakup? It would have been for the first time that a man would have left Indrani, who had deserted at least four men in the past.
More on the sensational Sheena Bora murder case
This is the question haunting the Mumbai Police who are probing Indrani’s alleged role in the murder of her 24-year-old daughter Sheena Bora on April 24, 2012. The police believe that Indrani killed Sheena in a desperate attempt to protect her social as well as financial interests.
With Sheena’s brother Mikhail’s claim that he too was in Indrani’s crosshairs, the police are investigating what could have prompted Indrani to think of erasing her bitter past that was very much in the dark until her arrest on August 26. Sheena and Mikhail both are believed to have been born out of wedlock.
According to a police officer, Indrani feared that Sheena would reveal her disturbed past to Peter, who was already under the impression that he was losing control of his wealth to Indrani, if she opposed Sheena’s marriage with Peter’s son and her stepson Rahul. The probe revealed that Peter knew only a few people from Indrani’s life like Sheena, Sanjeev Khanna and Vidhi, the daughter of Indrani and Khanna whom he legally adopted after their marriage in 2002.
