Mom's Murky Past to Shed Vital Clues in Unravelling Nail-biting Case

NEW DELHI:The English language has been stressed and stretched to describe Indrani Mukerjea and her husband Peter Mukerjea.

Ever since their story of subterfuge and gore came to light, no one, including the political class, is talking anything else. Land Bill, GST, Indo-Pak skirmishes, PM’s speeches, special sessions, Arvind Kejriwal’s harangues, Rahul Gandhi’s anger, Lalitgate, ambulance and Vyapam scam, Patel quota are all passé, relegated to the background. With social media and TV-channels living with the story for the last 72 hours or more, spilling of the beans is not confined to Indrani’s driver, Shyamvar Rai, an accomplice in the murder of Sheena Bora; allegedly committed by mother Indrani and her ex-husband, Sanjeev Khanna.

And as the questions regarding the motive(s) swirled around, a brother of the murdered Sheena, Mikhael, broke his three-year-long silence on the issue. He is now throwing “documentary” evidence-- audio tapes and photos-- at the investigating Mumbai top-cop Rakesh Maria and the media. All to prove his mother’s guilt, with hints of property dispute and swindled money from the failed media business. Indeed, a sordid tale.

This being the case which is unfolding across the cities of Guwahati, Kolkata, Delhi and Mumbai, can anyone focus on anything else? A senior politician from Mumbai commented.

A Congress worker, with a stake in Rajasthan politics, thus rattles out details of this messy murder mystery. This was when he was asked about the ambulance scam embroiling many of the Congress dynasts.

Despite the fact that arch rival and BJP’s Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje has handed over the ambulance case to the CBI, the Congress satrap is engrossed in TV: “Indrani was over confident. Otherwise why would she return to Mumbai from Spain where they (Indrani and Peter) had settled down?” he adds with a twinkle, not like Lalit Modi, though, the latter is only into financial bungling. In the BJP, there are barbs that galore about “how it’s so typical of the UPA period--no social-moral values”. Says a BJP Ashok Road regular: “Who would in our party know about such people, except…the minister whose tenant Mukherjea was.”

Kolkata, however, is buzzing. A top bureaucrat close to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has come out as the person, who was “witness to a secret wedding” of Indrani that had taken place at the famous Kamakhya Temple in Assam.
