Constable in ACB Net for 'Demanding' Rs 30,000 Bribe

THANE: A police constable attached to the Thane District Rural police, has been booked by the ACB for allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs 30,000 from a transporter here.

Deputy S P Balkrishna Sawant of Thane ACB told PTI today that constable Deepak Mahadik had allegedly demanded the sum from the complainant to allow him to transport cattle in his vehicles. The policeman had also demanded a monthly "hafta" (extortion money collected on a weekly or monthly basis) from the complainant for not initiating any action against him.

The constable had earlier 'accepted' a part payment of Rs 15,000 from the complainant following which he had approached the Thane unit of the ACB, the officer said. On December 14, when Mahadik again made a demand for the monthly "hafta", the complainant's claims were verified and an offence under section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act of 1988 has been registered against him with the Vashind Police station of Sahapur division, ACB said.

The constable has not been arrested yet.
