12 Killed, 3 Hurt in Accident

GUWAHATI: At least 12 people were killed and three others injured in a road mishap near the Kaziranga National Park in Assam’s Golaghat district.

Official sources said the mishap occurred in the wee hours of Sunday when a speedy Tata Winger, which the victims were travelling in from Lakhimpur district to Golaghat district, collided with a heavily-loaded stranded truck. Rash driving and foggy weather conditions were blamed for the accident.

The sources said the victims were returning home after attending the ongoing Srimanta Sankardeva Sangha’s 84th session at Dhakuakhana in Lakhimpur district.   “Altogether 15 people were in the vehicle. Twelve people, including five women, were killed and three others were injured. The injured are undergoing treatment at the Jorhat Medical College and Hospital,” the sources said.

The driver of the vehicle jumped out to save his life but was critically injured in the process.
