NEW DELHI: The National Commission for Minorities (NCM) has asked the Uttar Pradesh government to submit a report in connection with the killing in a police shoot-out of 25 people reportedly protesting against forced sterilisation in Muzaffarnagar during the Emergency in 1976.
The Commission has asked the state government to apprise it about the action taken over the 1976 incident and its present status under the Justice Ranganath Mishra Commission report.
NCM member Farida Abdullah Khan has sought information in this regard by sending a letter to the Chief Secretary of UP, on the basis of a complaint filed by an NGO.
As the case dates back to 1970's, the Commission "insists you to inform whether any action was taken in regard to that incident", reads the letter. The letter has also asked the UP government to furnish the present situation under the Justice Mishra Commission
Rajhans Bansal, Director of Delhi-based Centre for Human Rights, has alleged in his complaint lodged with NCM that no action has been taken in the killing of 25 people, protesting against the forced sterilisation, in police firing in KhalaparColony of Muzaffarnagar.
Twenty-three Muslims and two Hindus were killed in the incident, among which six were minor boys.
In the complaint, it has been alleged that an almirah containing the documents related to the incident is still lying sealed in the legal archives section of the Muzaffarnagar Collectorate.
The complainant also alleged that no police official has been punished in connection with the case. The complainant demanded that the families of the deceased be paid Rs 20 lakh each as compensation.
