Sunanda Murder: Amar Questioned by SIT for Two Hours

NEW DELHI: Former Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh was on Wednesday interrogated for two hours about the conversation he reportedly had  with Congress MP Shashi Tharoor’s wife Sunanda Pushkar days before her mysterious death.

Amar recently claimed that Sunanda had called him a few days before her death, she told him that she was depressed over the IPL fiasco, she broke down, and that she wanted to reveal to him something about the controversy around her sweat equity in the Kochi IPL franchise. A senior officer of the Special Investigation Team of Delhi Police said the cops wanted to know what she had revealed to him and whether the IPL row had anything to do with her death.

After the questioning at the Vasant Vihar police station, Amar said he had conveyed whatever he knew about Sunanda. “When Delhi Police officials learnt that Sunanda had talked to me a few days ago before her death, they asked me about the sequence of my conversation with her. I told them whatever I know,” he said.

“I am not against Shashi Tharoor or anyone. He and Sunanda were both affectionate to me, and I just want the truth to come out. If someone murdered Sunanda, he should be caught,” he said. He, however, refused to divulge the details of the interrogation. “I was quizzed for about two hours. Since the matter is under investigation, it is best that we let police investigate it properly. At the end, everything will be clear. Sunanda was a good friend. I told police whatever truth I know about her.”

After Sunanda’s death last year, Amar had told the media that she was a brave woman who wouldn’t commit suicide.

Sunanda, 52, was found dead in January last year in a five-star hotel suite she was sharing with her husband.

Police Commissioner B S Bassi said Tharoor would be called again for questioning. Sunanda’s son Shiv Menon would also be questioned.

A week after Sunanda’s death, the 21-year-old son had issued a statement saying his mother was “too strong to commit suicide”.

Tharoor to be questioned again

Tharoor, who was grilled for four hours till midnight on January 19, will now be confronted with the versions of his personal staffers whose statements have already been recorded. “We have found contradictions in the statements of Tharoor and his staffers, and that’s why we need to confront him about the contradictions to get a clear picture,” said a police official.
