NEW DELHI: The Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day on Thursday as a mark of respect to former president A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, while the Rajya Sabha was adjourned till 2 p.m.
As the Lok Sabha assembled for the day's proceedings, Speaker Sumitra Mahajan said that since the last rites of Kalam were in progress, the house was adjourned for the day.
She also made obituary references to three ex-members of the house and the martyrs of terrorist attack in Gurdaspur in Punjab.
The Rajya Sabha too was adjourned till 2 p.m.
"Since the funeral of A.P.J. Abdul Kalam is in progress, the house is adjourned till 2 p.m.," Rajya Sabha Chairman M. Hamid Ansari said. Ansari also condemned the terrorist attack in Punjab.
Both houses observed two minute's silence in the memory of the Gurdaspur martyrs.
Kalam, who died on Monday in Shillong due to cardiac arrest, was accorded a state funeral at his home town of Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu.
