Agriculture Minister to Attend FAO Conference in Rome

The Conference would also elect a new FAO director general and approve its programme of work and budget for the next two years.

NEW DELHI: Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh will represent India at the 39th session of the Conference of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) in Rome, the agriculture ministry said in a statement here on Saturday.

The main agenda before the two-day conference, starting on Monday, is reviewing the progress in implementation of the United Nations' agreed millennium development goals (MDGs) and the results of the second international conference on nutrition, forestry and fisheries.

The Conference is the governing body of the FAO, while its main function is to make recommendations to the member nations and associate members regarding issues pertaining to food and agriculture for their implementation through national action, the statement said.

The Conference would also elect a new FAO director general and approve its programme of work and budget for the next two years.

The FAO membership is currently made up of 194 nations, one member organisation in the European Union, and two associate members - the Faroe Islands and Tokelau.
