SRINAGAR: Security forces have gunned down a second militant during an operation to thwart a major infiltration bid in Machil sector of north Kashmir's Kupwara district, army said today.

"The troops conducting the search found a militant hiding in the area. Subsequently, in exchange of fire, one more militant was killed thus bringing the total number of casualties to two in the encounter which started yesterday morning" an army spokesman said here.

Earlier, alert troops noticed a group of militants trying to sneak into this side from across the Line of Control (LoC) at Sardari Nar in Machil sector in the wee hours yesterday.

The troops challenged the militants who indulged in indiscriminate firing and in the ensuing gunbattle, a militant was killed.

The identity and group affiliation of the slain militants are yet to be ascertained, the spokesman said.
