BEGUSARAI: In a scathing attack on RJD chief Lalu Prasad over his ‘Hindus also eat beef’ remark, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday termed it an insult to Yaduvanshis (Yadavs), core supporters of the Yadav leader. Mocking Lalu for his controversial statement and his subsequent U-turn, he said, “When people from his own community protested, he made an excuse, claiming a shaitan (devil) had entered into his body.” Rubbing it in, he taunted, “We want to know how the shaitan got his address. The devil found no other body in entire Bihar, India and the whole world! And he also welcomed the devil as if some relative has come.”

Being the star campaigner of the NDA, the PM addressed four rallies at Munger, Begusarai, Samastipur and Nawada on Thursday. Warning against the return of jungle raj, he described the upcoming assembly elections as jungle raj vs vikas raj and recalled how “kidnapping industries” thrived under RJD’s 15-year rule.

Not sparing Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar either, Modi said the JD (U) leader had promised during the 2010 assembly polls that he would not seek votes if he failed to provide regular electricity to every house. “Will you trust a man who has failed in fulfilling his promise?” he asked his audience. Thursday being the death anniversary of socialist icon Jayaprakash Narayan, Modi tactically used the occasion to attack Lalu and Nitish, both considered close associates of the late leader but have now joined hands with the Congress. Calling the grand alliance of the JDU-RJD and Congress Mahaswarth Gathbandhan (most selfish alliance), he asked the electorate to reject them.

Not one to take it lying down, Lalu challenged Modi to prove that he had made the shaitan excuse. “I challenge Modi to show me my shaitan comment or else, publicly apologise to the people of Bihar for insulting them with this barb on me,” he tweeted. In another tweet, he said, “Modi should not add insult to Bihar through the figment of his shaitan. I challenge Modi and a few of his sycophant mediapersons to show me my statement on it.”
