Tension Prevails as Panchayat Member Shot Dead in UP

SULTANPUR: Tension prevailed in Baldirai area here after a mob set afire Valipur police outpost and a motorcycle today after a Panchayat member was shot dead by unknown miscreants, police said.

The incident occurred this morning around 10.15 am in Valipur village when unidentified persons shot Panchayat member Jamil Ahmad (53) after which irate locals gathered at the outpost and set it afire, Additional Superintendent of Police Pradumn Singh said.

The mob also torched the motorcycle of a constable after which police lobbed tear-gas shells to control them, he said.

Senior officers have reached the spot and heavy force has been deployed in the village, he said.

The incident is stated to be fallout of old enmity, the ASP said.
