PATNA: On a day when Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) chief Jitan Ram Manjhi tried to drive a tough bargain with BJP leaders in Delhi, he faced embarrassment on his home turf after his younger son Praveen Kumar Suman was on Sunday caught with Rs 4.65 lakh in cash in Jahanabad district.

“Praveen was detained after Rs 4.65 lakh was found in his vehicle during checking for unaccounted cash,” said a district police officer.

The Election Commission has imposed strict restrictions on carrying cash and people carrying more than Rs 50,000 in cash have to inform authorities about the source and purpose of the money.

According to Magadh Range DIG Ratn Sanjay, Praveen claimed the money was for making payments for ongoing construction work in his house. Police intercepted his vehicle near Makhdumpur which happens to be the assembly constituency of Parveen.

HAM spokesperson Daish Rizwan said, “The EC should probe as Manjhi’s family is being targeted by the government.”

Over Rs 50 lakh in cash was seized by police during routine checking of vehicles.
