NEW DELHI: Former Delhi Law Minister Somnath Bharti arrested in domestic violence and attempt to murder case registered against him by his wife Lipika Mitra broke down in the police custody during the interrogation on Wednesday.  Police have also added a section 212 (for harbouring offender) of the Indian Penal Code to the FIR.

Bharti is under the two days of police remand. Police said he broke down when the questions related with his pet dog biting his wife were asked by the interrogators, his eyes welled up with tears and he showed a gesture of remorse. Police also said many facts related with case are still to be verified and they would seek his remand on Thursday for further investigation.

According to the police, Bharti who did not cooperate in the probe changed stance on Wednesday. “He broke down on Wednesday morning during interrogation when asked about the incident involving his dog Don. He was kept under the police lock up of Dwarka Sector 23 police station,” said a police officer.

Earlier, police said that Bharti was not cooperating with them during the probe. “Now he shows a little cooperation, though he still denies the charges leveled by his wife on him,” said the officer adding, Bharti also did not disclosing the names of the persons who helped him in his hiding.

Police said they will seek inclusion of section 212 of the IPC in the FIR to trace all those who helped Bharti to evade police arrest. “This is an important part of the case as a lot of time and resources were wasted in tracing Bharti who kept on absconding despite cancellation of his bail from the court,” added the officer.

The sleuths will take him to Uttar Pradesh’s Agra and Mathura where he reportedly stayed during evading his arrest. “We want to bring all those who harboured him to books in the coming days. We would seek more police custody of Bharti tomorrow (Thursday) in the court so that he can be taken to places like Agra and Mathura where he hid to evade arrest,” added the officer.

On Tuesday, the investigating officials had said that they were also trying to take the dental imprints of Bharti’s dog Don to match it with the bite marks on his wife’s body. Bharti’s wife has accused him of unleashing Don on her when she was pregnant.
