LAKHIMPUR (UP): A 10-year-old girl was found dead in Nighasan area here, allegedly killed after being raped, police said today.

Half-naked body of the victim was recovered from a field where she had gone to collect grass for domestic animals, police said, adding the unidentified killer strangulated the girl to death with her own leggings.

It is suspected that the attacker first outraged the modesty of the child and later killed her to conceal his identity, Circle Officer Nighasan Mohd Ibrahim said.

On the complaint of the girl's father, an FIR had been registered implicating a person of the same village, he said. Medical examination was being carried out to confirm the rape charge, he said.

In another incident in Bhira area, a youth allegedly raped a hearing and speech-impaired teenaged girl and fled, leaving the girl in a very serious condition, police said.

The girl somehow revealed in gestures to her sister-in-law about the alleged rape. However, owing to her inability to speak, she could not disclose the accused's identity.

Bhira police rushed the girl to district hospital where she was reported to be serious.

An FIR has been lodged and efforts are on to identify and nab the culprit, they said.
