NEW DELHI: A day after an attempt was made to attack the Jawaharlal Nehru Student Union president Kanhaiya Kumar in Nagpur, a country-made pistol and a threat letter was recovered from a bag in a DTC bus operating to and fro from JNU campus in Delhi.

Delhi Police have stepped up the security for Kumar and Umar Khalid, after the letter recovery. According to the police the letter was undersigned Uttar Pradesh Navnirman Sena's national president, Amit Jani. Additionally the Tilak Nagar police station has asked the university authorities to provide them with CCTV footage.

“We have sent the letter for forensic analysis and further investigation is underway. The bag had a letter, undersigned Amit Jani, which threatened that heads of Kumar and Khalid will be decapitated,” a high ranking police official said.

Jani is the same person who was angry over rape remarks on Indian Army by Kumar earlier, threatened to organise a shootout at JNU, on Facebook.

Kumar doesn't get security cover inside the campus but the university authorities have clearly been instructed to inform Vasant Kunj (North) police station every time he leaves the campus and security is provided accordingly.

The university students who have been agitating ever since they were arrested in a sedition case over an event on campus, meanwhile, demanded that the JNU administration lodge a police complaint against various individuals who have been issuing threats to Kumar and others.

“Modi government is actively promoting such people and ensuring protection to them. Amit Jani has the backing of the Modi government and anything that happens to any member of JNU community due to him, will be with the knowledge and connivance of the central government” said the JNUSU in a official statement.

The union has written a letter to the administration asking the authorities to file an FIR against Jani.
