BJP slams Congress for 'lip service' to farmers

BJP-led NDA government has done much more for the farmers than all the Congress governments put together, said party national secretary Shrikant Sharma.

NEW DELHI: The BJP on Monday slammed the Congress for 'lip service' to farmers. With the Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi raising the issue of farmers’ distress during the last two and a half years
under the NDA regime, the BJP sought to know what the Congress had done to raise the prospects of the farming community.

“In the last seven decades when the Congress was in power, the party did only lip service to the farmers. In contrast, the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre has done much more for the farmers than all the Congress governments put together,” said the BJP national secretary Shrikant Sharma.

The Congress vice-president had led a party delegation to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to raise the “plight” of farmers last week. The delegation had demanded waiver of farmers’ loans and a moratorium on repayment of crop loans.

The BJP also lashed at the Congress government in Uttarakhand for declaring a special 90-minute Friday break for Muslim employees. Sharma said that the move would set a wrong precedent.

“The Congress is pursuing a divisive agenda in its greed for power. Very few people will be left working in the government offices if Hindus, who observe different forms of pujas across the month, are also given a similar concession,” added Sharma.
