Cricketer Harbhajan Singh denies rumours on joining politics

Singh said that he was the brand ambassador of the Election Commission and added that he had given it in writing about three weeks ago that he would not align with any political party.

CHANDIGARH: Reacting to reports that said that the Congress might field him from Amritsar Lok Sabha seat or a Punjab Assembly seat from Jalandhar, Cricketer Harbhajan Singh clarified that he was not joining any political party on Thursday.

Putting the speculation to rest, Singh tweeted, “I have no intentions of joining politics any time soon. Please stop spreading rumors.’’

Singh said that he was the brand ambassador of the Election Commission and added that he had given it in writing about three weeks ago that he would not align with any political party.

It was being speculated that cricketer-turned-political Navjot Singh Sidhu could contest from Amritsar (East) seat the assembly, a seat currently held by his wife Navjot Kaur Sidhu. According to the rumour mills, Harbhajan Singh was to join Congress and contest for the Amritsar Lok Sabha seat.

There has been talk in the congress circles that Sidhu might fight Lok Sabha seat of Amritsar as Capt Amarinder Singh resigned as Member of Parliament from Amritsar.

Sidhu’s wife who joined the Congress had indicated that he (Sidhu) would contest the upcoming State polls on the party ticket. Also the grape wine was that Harbhajan Singh might contest from any seat from Jalandhar in the coming assembly elections on Congress ticket.
