Police, African Students Community Platform Created by MEA

NEW DELHI: A mechanism to have regular interaction between police and African students community in Bengaluru is being put in place, days after a 21-year-old Tanzanian woman was allegedly assaulted and stripped in that city.     

Spokesperson in the External Affairs Ministry Vikas Swarup said the Police-African Students Community platform has been created as part of efforts to enhance security for the community besides ensuring that similar incidents do not recur. He said state authorities have assured the victim and her friends about full protection, support and a fair probe into the incident.      

The Tanzanian woman student was allegedly beaten up and stripped by a mob on January 31 in a case of "mistaken identity" in Bengaluru after a woman was mowed down by a car here. Four constables, one inspector, and one Assistant Commissioner of Police have been suspended in the while a total of 11 accused were arrested in connection with the case, said Swarup.   

"A regular Police-African community interaction is being put in place so that similar incidents do not occur again. Security for African students have been beefed up. "The state authorities along with college authorities as well as members of the local community will be involved in coordination committees to handle issues related to foreign students," said Swarup.     

A team comprising the Tanzanian High Commissioner and senior MEA officials travelled to Bengaluru in the wake of the incident.
