ALLAHABAD: Google is again faced with a legal notice after Allahabad district court ordered a criminal case against the company for its image search engine that displays Prime Minister Narendra Modi among "top 10 criminals of the world".

A quick search for "top 10 criminals" in Google images does show Modi's image, but a disclaimer by the search engine clarify, "These results don’t reflect Google’s opinion or our beliefs; our algorithms automatically matched the query to web pages with these images."

News reports mention that a legal notice was issued by the court to global search engine giants Google, its CEO and India head for naming Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the list of top 10 criminals in the world. The case was filed by advocate Sushil Kumar Mishra.

According to the complainant Gupta, PM Modi's image popped out while Googling for 'top 10 criminals in the world'. Gupta further stated that he had asked Google to remove Modi's name but till date has not got any response from them. He went on to add that he had approached the cops regarding the issue.

He filed an application before the chief judicial magistrate which was dismissed on November 3 last year as it was determined to be a civil case. But this did not deter Gupta who challenged CJM's order and went on to file a revision application which was passed by the court.

The next hearing of the case will be held on August 31.
