Kud firing: Cong MLC stages walkout; BJP takes a dig at govt

Monga added that there was a shutdown in Bemina area yesterday over the issue and demanded govt clarification.

SRINAGAR: An opposition Congress member in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Council today staged a walkout from the House after his demand for a clarification from the government over the recent incident of firing between a militant and security forces at Kud in Udhampur district was turned down.

As soon as the House met in the morning, Congress MLC Ghulam Nabi Monga raised the matter, saying the family members of Tanveer Sultan, killed in security forces firing, have contested the government's version that he was a militant.

Monga added that there was a shutdown in Bemina area yesterday over the issue and demanded a clarification from the government.

However, Chairman Anayat Ali asked him to sit down even as no one from the treasury benches spoke on the issue.

Demanding a statement from the government, the Congress MLC then staged a walkout from the House.

The government on Tuesday had told both the Houses through a statement that Tanveer, a militant, had fired upon a joint search party of the police and CRPF which left a woman dead and two others injured.

Tanveer was killed in retaliatory firing by the security forces, it had added.

Meanwhile, ruling BJP legislators took a dig at the government for not extending financial assistance to a woman injured in the shootout.

They sought the attention of the Chairman towards the woman, Rubi, wife of Ravi Kumar, an employee of the Legislative Council Secretariat and said the government had earlier announced all financial assistance for the treatment of the woman but now, it was asking for her bio-data.

Does she need a job that she has to submit her bio-data, they said.

The Chairman urged the government to ensure assistance to the injured.
