THANE: An FM radio station is likely to start operating soon in Thane Central Prison with inmates doubling up as jockeys, according to a senior official.

During a visit of Thane Guardian Minister Eknath Shinde to the prison yesterday, Jail Superintendent Hiralal Jadhav informed him about the plan to start the radio station in the premises in the next fortnight.

Shinde, who also inspected the area of the proposed radio station, was told by Jadhav that efforts are on to rope-in megastar Amitabh Bachchan for its inauguration.

The inmates of the jail will double up as jockeys for the station. The programmes produced will be for the prisoners and these will also be broadcast in other parts of the city.

Shinde said that the government would provide assistance to get the permissions required to start the hub.

He suggested that a gymnasium may also be started in the jail.

On the occasion, Shinde handed over certificates to 29 inmates who recently completed a yoga course conducted by the Patanjali Yog Samiti.

The minister directed the Public Works Department to carry out the necessary repairs and renovation of various facilities in the jail premises.
