KANPUR: Uttar Pradesh Police will launch a web based crime mapping system on April 1 for "preventive policing" in the state, under which information of all cases registered in last five years in the state would be uploaded.

Inspector General PAC (East Zone) Ashutosh Pandey and IG Kanpur Zone Zaki Ahmed today said "preventive policing" service was launched in the nine districts of Kanpur zone about two years ago now it is being extended to the whole state.

All the police stations in the state would feed last five year's crime data to Google and after identifying crime sensitive areas on Google Maps, police check-posts and pickets will be set up in each of those areas, they said.

"Police reaches spot after the crime has been committed and then tries to nab the culprits but by preventive policing more cops would be posted where the number of crimes have been high, and try to nab the criminals at the earliest," they said.

Data-feeding to Google would help the police understand crime patterns specific to a particular locality, they said, adding one young policeman from every station would be given training in how to integrate emerging technology tools like 'Google Maps' into ongoing operations.
