GANDINAGAR: To mark the International Women's Day, the woman BJP legislator Nimaben Acharya today presided over the proceedings of Gujarat Assembly.

Also, other women MLAs were given precedence during the general discussion in the House.

Acharya, an MLA from Kutch, is on the panel of presiding officers of Assembly. To mark the Women's Day, the Speaker Ganpat Vasava appointed her as the Speaker, a decision welcomed by both BJP and the opposition Congress MLAs.

Chief Minister Anandiben Patel said in the House that it was the duty of every MLA to see that women are given their due importance.

"The celebration of Women's Day should not be limited to only one day. We all MLAs of this House should ensure that women do not face any difficulty in their lives and are given equal opportunities to grow. BJP government is committed to the overall development of women," said Patel.

The House also had women sergeants accompanying the Speaker as well as a women officer serving as Assembly Secretary during the day.
