Manmohan Government Said No Thanks to Netaji's Ashes

NEW DELHI: The former UPA government was lukewarm to the idea of bringing Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose’s ashes back to India from Renkoji temple in Japan, and had even discouraged the Japanese government from raising the issue during a meeting between former PM Manmohan Singh and his Japanese counterpart in December 2006. This is according to a secret document from the Prime Minister’s Office, which was among 50 files declassified by the government on Tuesday. The first batch of 100 files relating to Netaji was released by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 23. Japan PM Shinzo Abe had wanted to raise the issue of returning the purported mortal remains of Netaji to India.
