NEW DELHI: The Central government has identified a bungalow in Lutyens’ Delhi for President Pranab Mukherjee after his tenure gets over in July 2017. As per President's Pension Rules, 1962, a retired president is entitled to have an accommodation that too rent free anywhere in the country with free water and electricity for his entire life.

The Centre has zeroed in the bungalow of former Lok Sabha speaker Purno Agitok Sangma, a politician from the Northeast and who died of a heart attack at the age of 68 in march this year,  currently occupied by his son Conrad, who is Lok Sabha MP from Tura in Meghalaya.

The Ministry of Urban Development has requested Conrad to vacate the 34, APJ Abdul Kalam Road bungalow, which is the type-VIII. The Ministry has written him to vacate the house since the first time MPs are not entitled to a type-VIII bungalow.

This will become the new address of President Pranab Mukherjee after his tenure gets over in July 2017, hinting that he may not get a second term in office. Interestingly, Mukherjee had defeated Sangma to become the 13th President of India.

The step was taken after, the source said, President's Secretariat had requested the Ministry to look for a suitable accommodation for Mukherjee. President's Secretariat officials were also shown the bungalow and they have agreed to it.
