SSB man killed, 8 injured in militant attack in Srinagar

After the militant attack, police and paramilitary personnel launched combing and search operation in the area to track down the attackers.

SRINAGAR: A paramilitary Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) jawan was killed and either others including a policeman injured when militant launched hit-and-run attack on their vehicle in Zakura area in outskirts of Srinagar on Friday evening.

An SSB official told Express that militants fired at the vehicles ferrying SSB men back to their camp after performing law and order duties in the day.

“The SSB men were returning to their camp when they came under militant firing at Zakura area in outskirts of Srinagar at around 7.05 pm,” he said.

The official said the SSB men also returned the fire. 

“After a brief encounter, the militants escaped from the area,” he said.

The official said eight SSB men and a J&K policeman were injured in the militant attack. 

“The injured were immediately evacuated to hospital, where one of them succumbed to injuries,” he said adding doctors have termed condition of two other injured SSB jawans as critical.

After the militant attack, police and paramilitary personnel launched combing and search operation in the area to track down the attackers. 

However, no arrests were reported as militants had managed to escape from the area.

No militant outfit has claimed responsibility of the attack.

It is the second militant attack in Srinagar within two days.

Earlier, on Wednesday security forces had killed two militants, who had taken over seven-storey EDI building at Sempora, Pampore in outskirts of Srinagar, after 57-hours long gunfight.
