NEW DELHI: With social media becoming an important medium of communication, Centre has received 97 complaints about online trolling and harassment on facebook, twitter and Instagram in the last one year.

Minister of State for Women and Child Development Krishna Raj in reply to a question in Lok Sabha informed the house that the ministry has set up a Cell to report complaints relating to online trolling/harassment with effect from July, 2016.

“So far, 97 complaints have been received through Facebook, Twitter and Instagram,” she said.

In response to harassment of women in cyber space, the ministry in 2016 had launched a campaign wherein such complaints could be made directly to the social media handles of the ministry, with assured responses.

The Ministry is also running a grievance redressal cell which registers and responds to direct complaints via email from women and children across the country.

The minister cited the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data that a total number of 1203 cases in 2013, 758 cases in 2014 and 816 cases in 2015 were registered under publishing/ transmitting of obscene/sexually explicit content in electronic form which shows a mixed trend.

This includes a total number of 599 and 606 cases of insult to the modesty of women during 2014 and 2015 respectively.
