NEW DELHI: An oblique reference by senior Congress leader Anand Sharma about President Ramnath Kovind’s maiden speech missing out on first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru and putting Mahatama Gandhi and Deen Dayal Upadhyay in the same league led to heated exchanges between BJP and Congress in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.

As the house met, Sharma said the government is trying to slight names of Mahatma Gandhi, Nehru and Indira Gandhi and moved an adjournment notice to speak on the matter during Zero Hour. His remarks were objected to by Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley who said the opposition misuses adjournment notices for publicity.

“We find that motions under rule 267 are being misused and Chair must be guided by a principle that you can’t have a Zero Hour for the benefit of TV cameras,” said Jaitley. He also demanded that the chair expunge the remarks by Sharma as any reference to people at high constitutional authorities cannot be raised in the House. Sharma said he has not named any high constitutional authority but Jaitley said that everyone knows whom he was referring to.
