RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav nominates his family’s vegetable supplier to Bihar Legislative Council along with Rabri Devi, Manjhi’s son
The other two Grand Alliance candidates are Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) state president Ram Chander Purve and Mohsin Qadir for the Bihar Legislative Council polls.
PATNA: Keeping up his tradition of rewarding people loyal to him, jailed RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav has nominated his family’s longtime vegetable supplier, Syed Khurshid Mohsin, to Bihar Legislative Council. Mohsin filed the papers along with Yadav’s wife and former chief minister Rabri Devi on Friday.
RJD state president Ram Chandra Purve and Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) president and former CM Jitan Ram Manji’s son Santosh Suman also filed their nomination papers at the biennial polls for the Upper House slated to be held on April 26.
Mohsin, in his early 60s, has been supplying vegetables to the RJD chief’s household for more than the past three decades. A resident of Biharsharif in Nalanda district, he also helps with organic farming at the Yadavs’ farmhouse.
The choice of the little-known, low-profile Mohsin shocked many in RJD. Even though there were several claimants for the four seats in the Legislative Council that the party can win, sources said the decision to nominate Mohsin was taken by the party chief, who is currently recuperating at AIIMS in New Delhi.
Lalu Prasad Yadav is known for suitably rewarding his close aides and loyalists, often with political positions. When he was chief minister of Bihar, he had nominated Brahmadev Anand Paswan to the Legislative Council in 1993. Paswan was then unknown even within the party. His only claim to fame was that he had written a long verse in praise of Lalu called “Lalu Chalisa” on the lines of “Hanuman Chalisa”.
A few years later, Yadav had also nominated to the state Upper House a man who used to cook delicious dishes for him – Anwar Ahmed. Similarly, Yadav had sent to Rajya Sabha his close friend and lawyer Rajniti Prasad.
The decision to nominate Dalit leader Jitan Ram Manjhi’s son Santosh Suman was reportedly taken soon after Manjhi walked out of NDA and made his HAM an ally of RJD and Congress in the grand alliance.
Elections are slated for 11 seats of Bihar Legislative Council. Two of these seats are vacant while the terms of the rest nine MLCs are ending on May 5They include Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, his deputy Sushil Kumar Modi, health minister Mangal Pandey and leader of opposition in the Council, Rabri Devi.
