AGARTALA: The BJP Tripura state committee proposed the government to appoint gold medal winner in the prestigious FIG World Challenge Cup in Mersin in Turkey Dipa Karmakar, as brand ambassador of the state.

The 24-year-old Dipa had finished fourth in Rio Olympics in 2016 but her success in Mersin once again illuminated the name of Tripura across the globe by her hard work and sheer commitment.

The party general secretary Pratima Bhowmik told media that the Chief Minister has already announced to do honour Dipa for her success.

"We are really proud to see Dipa Karmakar won a gold medal in an international event in Turkey.

The party earnestly requests the state government to make her brand ambassador for the state of Tripura, which the state government has been looking for to promote the potential of Tripura across world", Bhowmik said.

The Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb has been relentlessly working to make Tripura a model state within next three years.

It will be good if the government makes her ambassador of the state to promote tourism, horticulture and investment hub, she added.

Dipa had created history becoming the first Indian to finish fourth in gymnastics at the Olympics and she crossed another significant milestone becoming the first from her country to win a gold medal in an international gymnastics event.

After the heartbreak at Rio, where she narrowly missed a bronze medal, Karmakar received yet another rude jolt when she suffered a career-threatening knee injury.

She underwent a successful surgery, but Karmakar was out of action for two years, missing out on several big events including the World Championships and the Commonwealth Games.

"We are indebted to Dipa for her success not only she achieved gold medal but for her contribution India scripted a history in the event of athletics.

People of the world now got to know the name of Tripura for Dipa Karmakar. Despite several odds and deficiencies in infrastructure she displayed her talent and become inspiration for all of us," Mr Deb said.
