JAIPUR: In a huge embarrassment to the Vasundhara Raje government in Rajasthan, a BJP MLA has claimed that Rakbar Khan died of thrashing in police custody, rather than mob lynching by gau rakshaks.

MLA Gyan Dev Ahuja claimed on Monday that the beating in the police station lasted for three hours and that the gau rakshaks did rough up Rakbar but he was stable when he was handed over to the police.

“On that day, the people did beat Rakbar Khan, but his death was not caused by that beating. When Rakbar was handed over to the police, he was in a stable condition. However, after being taken to the police station, he was beaten so brutally that it caused his death. I have informed the State Home Minister, Gulab Chand Kataria and demand a judicial inquiry into the matter so that the culprits can be held responsible.”
“If Rakbar was already half dead after being beaten up by the mob, why did the police take him to the police station and not hospital directly?”

Ahuja has even alleged that the Ramgarh police station is involved in many acts of corruption and has questioned the action taken by the police in this particular incident. Home minister Kataria has instructed the Director General of Police to send a three-member team from Jaipur to Alwar to investigate whether the reported three-hour delay in reaching the hospital is verified or not.“I have told the DG, do not leave scope for any confusion. Send three senior police officers from Jaipur to confirm the delay made by police in taking Akbar to hospital and if there is any truth behind take appropriate action,” said Kataria.

When asked about the allegations made by Ahuja he answered, “The team has gone to Alwar to investigate if Akbar Khan was in police custody for three hours, what exactly happened there? Till the team submits its final report nothing can be said about this matter.” The Home minister dismissed the demand made by Ahuja for a judicial inquiry and said, “Judicial investigation is wastage of time. At least let the administrative inquiry reach a conclusion.”

Ahuja no stranger to controversy

  • In a similar lynching by cow vigilantes in Alwar in 2017, after the death of Pehlu Khan, BJP MLA Gyan Dev Ahuja said, “Any person smuggling cows, would have to suffer a similar fate.”

  • In 2016, Ahuja had said daily 50,000 bones, 3,000 used condoms, 500 used abortion injections, 10,000 cigarette ‘pieces’, were found in Jawaharlal Nehru University.
