AGARTALA: While ordering CID inquiry into the demolition of the statue of former deputy chief minister and late CPI (M) stalwart Baidyanath Majumdar on July 24 last, Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb today announced that the state government will rebuild the statue.
Police had arrested two youths of the locality Ranjit Das and Litan Sarkar yesterday in connection with the statue demolition.
However, the court released them on bail later.
The CPI(M) accused police of booking the youths in bailable sections to pave the way for their release and threatened to go for mass movement unless the accused persons were arrested in 48 hours.
Some unidentified miscreants demolished the statue of Baidyanath Majumdar at night and dumped it into the river, which triggered a massive reaction and all parties including BJP protested demanding an investigation.
The CPI-M party held rallies across the state accusing BJP cadres of the demolition incident.
While CPI-M accused BJP workers behind demolition of the statue, BJP leaders denied it and said that the CPI-M cadres did the mistake to create a controversy and malign the government.
Either, CPI-M cadres did this as outburst of their anger against the deprivation of the party to them for past 25 yrs or the party intentionally did it to divert the public attention from the series of development for cross-section of the society initiated by the BJP-IPFT government, said BJP vice-president Subal Bhowmik.
Meanwhile, Mr Deb spoke to DGP Akhil Kumar Shukla this morning and directed him to institute a time-bound inquiry into the forced dismantling of the statue and bring the culprits to book.
He has also directed the chief secretary to take initiative to reconstruction of the statue of Baidyanath Majumdar from the government.
Majumdar had been a five-time MLA of CPI-M from Chandipur assembly constituency under Kailashahar of Unokoti district from 1978 to 1998 and he was deputy chief minister of the state between 1993 and 1998.
He had died at the age of 88 in the year 2011 and his statue was erected in 2012.
Soon after BJP-IPFT government in Tripura came to power in March this year, two statues of Lenin had been demolished by unidentified miscreants in Belonia and Sabroom of South Tripura that earned severe criticism across the globe but police could not arrest the actual culprits.
