Jharkhand farmer ends life after water supply to plot stopped

RANCHI: A farmer allegedly hanged himself inside his house at Sakrauli village in Jharkhand’s Gumla district. While family members claimed that Balkeshwar Oraon, 50, ended his life after forest officials blocked water supply to his field, the police said it could not be the only reason for the extreme step.

“Water not reaching the fields might be one of the reasons behind the suicide,” said Sisai BDOr Manoranjan Kumar. If the matter was brought to the notice of local administration, action could have been taken after conducting an inquiry, he added. Oraon’s widow Rukmini said her husband was tensed after the water supply was stopped.

But, the cops claimed there might be some other issue as prima facie the economic condition of the family did not appear to be ‘very bad’. It would not be justified to say suicide was due to economic crisis, they said.
